Standing caveat

Trips are counted where they start and end. They say nothing about who rode or why. Per-resident figures divide an area’s trips by its population.

03 Municipal starts and ends

Municipal bikes only: scooter trips are published by area, not location

05 Data & methods

Built from Divvy’s trip files and the City of Chicago’s e-scooter trip tables.

Sources and pull dates

Trip files: Divvy’s monthly divvy-tripdata files (System Data), 2013-06-27 to 2026-08, pulled 2026-10-02, under the Divvy Data License Agreement. Not republished: the maps load only the counts they draw.

City of Chicago data portal, pulled 2026-10-02: E-Scooter Trips, 2019 pilot, 2020 and 2022 on (to 2025-12-31); Divvy Trips, 2013–2019; community areas; 2023 wards; the Equity Priority Area.

What counts as a trip

Every trip, including those under 60 seconds, as the City counts. Left out: trips that end before they start (11,201 municipal, 3,285 scooter). Corrected and kept: 239 rides across the November clock change. Repeated ride ids count once (307 rows).

Classic bikes in the scooter table

From 2024-07 the City’s scooter table also lists municipal classic-bike rides, under “Lyft”. Matched trip by trip (start hour, length to the second, start and end area) and removed: 1,406,855 rides in 2024 and 1,919,491 in 2025, 95% of classic rides. Chance alone matches 2%.

Check against the City’s totals

2025: the City announced 12.9 million trips, 6.8 million municipal and 6.1 million Lime (press release); this page counts 12.95 million, 6.87 million and 6.09 million. 2024: 11,028,554 and 6,681,480 municipal (Streetsblog); this page counts 11,024,782 and 6,700,455.

Gaps

No scooter trips for 2023-10 to 2023-12, and no scooter table for 2021. The 2019 pilot names no companies, so its trips count as other scooters.

Placement

E-bike trips ending away from a station are known only to a cell about 0.7 by 0.5 mile (22% of 2025 trip ends) and are placed by its center. Scooter trips are known only by community area. Wards are the 2023 map; tracts are 2020.

The City’s 2013–2019 table

The trip files match the City’s 2013–2019 table except 2015 (203 more trips) and 2018 (340 more).

Evanston and Oak Park

Shown with municipal bike trips only. Oak Park had stations only in 2016–2018.
