Chicago · civic data

Public data, worked all the way down to its assumptions.

I build maps and models from Chicago’s own records, then show exactly where they stop being able to answer the question.

Chicago’s underutilized schools are an unrealized opportunity

Chicago building energy

The properties Chicago’s Energy Benchmarking Ordinance covers, drawn as building footprints or markers wherever they could be placed, colored by reported energy use per square foot or in total, and hatched where a required report is missing. A density view adds up the reported energy by hexagon and community area. Data year 2022, with totals built from each property’s reported fuel use.

03 How I work

Source snapshots

Every figure names the dataset and the date it was pulled. Nothing is refreshed silently.

Assumptions exposed

Where a number depends on an assumption, the assumption is a control the reader can move.

Reproducible releases

Published CSVs and checksums live in each project’s public repo; the site only ships files that match it. Where a source’s license forbids republishing, the data is cited and the page says how it was used.

04 Contact

Corrections, questions about a source or a method, and requests for the data behind a figure are all welcome.
